Library: your portal’s reusable modules

Library: your portal’s reusable modules

Intended Audience:  Administrators

Reuse modules and build courses from existing content, through the portal library. Create the content once, then use it as many times as required.

Library overview

When you create a course, Safety Made Simple stores the individual modules in the portal library. The library organizes modules by type:

  • Modules holds all forms of uploaded content in a Text & Image module
  • Question Pools holds the sets of questions you use to generate exams and surveys
  • SCORMS and Tin Cans are the modules created with eLearning software to make interactive sessions

The library also contains Resources: the content you upload for learners to use outside a course.

The library does not hold exams, surveys, or assignments to reuse.

You can create content starting from Courses, or from Library. Either way, the individual modules are stored in the library, even when they appear in your courses.

Create a module from the library

If you do not yet have a course ready, but need to prepare content for it, you can create modules from the library.

  1. From the main navigation select Library.
  2. From the secondary navigation select the type of module you want to create, one of:
    • Modules, then from the action menu choose Add Module
    • Question Pools, then from the action menu choose Add Question Pool
    • SCORMS and Tin Cans, then from the action menu choose Add SCORM or Tin Can
  3. For each module type, continue to add content as described in the following articles:
    • Create a text and image module
    • Exams: create and edit a question pool
    • Add SCORM or Tin Can (xAPI) content to modules

Once your module is complete, it's available to add to one course, or lots of courses.

Add a module from the library to a course

These steps take place within Courses, rather than Library.

  1. From main navigation go to Courses > my course name.
  2. From secondary navigation go to Content.
  3. From the action menu select Add from the library to open the menu of modules available.
  4. Choose the modules you need to add to your course.
  5. Select Add to finish.

The following screenshot shows the Add from the library dialog.

You can freely add new modules to Draft courses.

Adding a module to a Published course changes the course structure. To add a module to a Published course, you need to create a new version of the course.

Delete a module from the library

You can delete a module, if you no longer want it available to use in new courses.

Deleting a module from the library does not delete it from the courses where the module is in use. Those "copies" remain in the courses, to avoid disruption to learners while a course is in progress.

  1. From main navigation go to Library.
  2. From secondary navigation select Modules.
  3. Find the module from the list available, and from More(aka 3-dot menu), select Remove.
  4. In the confirmation dialog, select Yes.
Tip: If you need to change a module's content urgently, and have the change apply to all courses, Safety Made Simple recommends editing the module to revise the content, rather than deleting it.

Edit a content module from the library

You can make changes to content modules in the library anytime, and your changes appear immediately, wherever that module is used in courses.

If the module is not yet in a course, your changes only affect the module in the library.

  1. From main navigation go to Library.
  2. From secondary navigation select Modules.
  3. Select the module from the list available.
  4. In Module Info, from the action menu select one of
    • Add Text & Images
    • Add Documents
    • Add Video
    • Add Sound
  5. Optionally: edit an existing module from that page.

Edit a question pool from the library

You can change the text of an existing question, and those changes appear wherever that particular question is in use in exams in the portal.

  1. From main navigation go to Library.
  2. From secondary navigation select Question Pools.
  3. Select a pool from the list available.
  4. Select the text of question you need to edit to open the question editor.
  5. Make the required changes to the question text or structure.
  6. Save to finish.

You can add more questions to an existing pool. New questions are available for whoever creates an exam and uses the pool from that point onward.

To add or remove questions from a Published exam, you need to

  • reconnect the question pool to the exam
  • republish the course

Edit a SCORM or Tin Can module from the library

The options for editing SCORM and Tin Can modules from the library are the same as for editing them in a course. Changes to the module options appear wherever the module is in use in courses. If you replace a SCORM or Tin Can file in a module, the replaced version appears in current courses.

Copy a module from the library

Copying from library modules gives you an editable version of the content: you can change the module without affecting the library version.
